What microneedling actually does

Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels in the skin. The skin responds by producing fresh collagen and elastin, which is what changes texture over the following weeks. It treats the dermis, which is why it reaches concerns that surface products cannot.

It is used for acne scarring, fine lines and stretch marks, and the depth is set differently for each. Scar tissue is treated deeper than a routine facial pass, and the practitioner works in multiple directions to break up the fibrous tethering under a rolling scar.

The device and the depth

We use a Health Canada approved motorized pen with sterile single-use cartridges, and the needle depth is adjusted area by area — shallower on delicate under-eye skin, deeper on tougher scar tissue. Depth is never assumed: every appointment starts with a skin assessment on the Fitzpatrick scale and a medical history review. Active breakouts are a contraindication, so scarring is treated once the skin has settled.

What a session involves

1. Skin assessment

Fitzpatrick assessment and medical history, plus honest advice on whether a course will help.

2. Cleanse and degrease

The surface is cleansed so nothing is driven into the channels.

3. Medical-grade disinfection

The area is disinfected before any needling begins.

4. Topical numbing

Applied and given time to work before the first pass.

5. Multi-pass needling

Depth set for the area, worked in multiple directions where scarring requires it.

6. Serum and recovery

A recovery serum, then aftercare instructions. Expect redness for 24 to 48 hours.

Microneedling questions we hear most

How many sessions will I need?

Texture and fine lines usually respond in three to four sessions. Acne scarring is planned as a course of six or more, spaced four to six weeks apart, because collagen remodelling is gradual.

Is there downtime?

Expect redness similar to mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours. Makeup should wait 24 hours, and sun exposure should be avoided for a week.

Does it hurt?

Topical numbing is applied first and given time to work. Most people describe it as a vibration with some scratching over bony areas.

Can it treat acne scars?

Yes, and it is one of the more effective options for boxcar and rolling scars because it reaches the dermis where the scarring sits. Active breakouts must settle first.

Is it safe for darker skin tones?

Yes. Microneedling creates a physical injury rather than a heat or light injury, so it does not carry the pigmentation risk that some light-based treatments do.
