How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Do You Need?
The short answer
Most people need six to eight laser hair removal sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart. That puts a full course at roughly six to twelve months. Some people need up to ten: coarse or dense hair, hormonally driven hair and deeper skin treated at conservative settings are the usual reasons.
You will usually see a clear reduction after two or three sessions, and 80 to 90 percent lasting reduction after a full course is typical on the FEMME 4D, though no clinic can honestly guarantee a number. Afterwards, many people come back for an occasional top-up. A review in American Family Physician puts laser at approximately six to eight sessions, depending on the area and on skin and hair colour, which matches what we see.
Why one session is never enough
Every hair follicle runs through its own cycle, independently of the ones next to it. The laser can only affect a follicle that is in its growth phase at the moment of treatment, because that is when the hair is attached to the follicle and carrying the pigment the light is absorbed by.
The hair cycle, and where the laser fits
At any one visit only part of an area’s follicles are in the first phase. The rest are waiting their turn.
- Phase 1 · laser works hereGrowingThe hair is attached and pigmented. These follicles are treated at this session.
- Phase 2TransitionA short stage where the hair detaches. Too late to treat.
- Phase 3 · next sessionRestingThe follicle is dormant. It is caught when it starts growing again.
That is the whole reason for the spacing. Between sessions you are not waiting for your skin to recover; you are waiting for the next batch of follicles to start growing, so there is something new to treat. Each session catches a different batch, which is why reduction builds up visit by visit.
Sessions and spacing by area
Different areas cycle at different speeds, so they are spaced differently. Facial hair cycles fastest; leg hair is among the slowest. A 2022 systematic review of controlled trials found the largest long-term reduction on the legs and the smallest on the face, which is one reason faces often need more sessions and more maintenance.
| Area | Typical course | Usually spaced | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Face (upper lip, chin, cheeks) | 6–8, often more | 4–6 weeks | Facial hair cycles fast, and chin and jawline hair is often hormonal. |
| Underarms | 6–8 | 4–6 weeks | Dense, coarse hair that responds well. |
| Bikini line and Brazilian | 6–8 | 4–6 weeks | Coarse hair responds well; density means steady sessions. |
| Arms | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | A slower cycle, and finer hair can take longer. |
| Legs | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | A long growth cycle, and strong long-term results. |
| Back and stomach | 6–8 | 6–8 weeks | Larger areas with a slower cycle. |
If you book full body, your technician sets one interval that suits all the areas together, usually four to six weeks. These are typical ranges, not a prescription: the exact spacing is set at each visit from what your hair is doing.
What changes your number
Your hair. Dark, coarse hair holds the most pigment and responds fastest. Finer hair takes longer. Blonde, red, grey and white hair may not respond at all, and we will tell you that at the consultation rather than sell you a course that cannot work.
Your skin. Every skin tone can be treated safely on the right device; the FEMME 4D blends four wavelengths, including 1064 nm for deeper skin. What deeper skin can change is the pace: treating at more conservative energy levels can add a session or two. Our guide to laser hair removal on dark skin explains why.
Hormones. PCOS and menopause can keep turning fine hairs into coarse ones while you are being treated. Expect the upper end of the range and ongoing maintenance, especially on the chin and jawline.
What you do between sessions. Shave, but never wax, pluck, thread or epilate: they pull the hair out of the follicle, and the follicle with a hair in it is exactly what the laser needs to find. A tan can also cost you a session, because it changes which settings are safe. Our aftercare guide covers the rest.
Keeping the spacing. Booking your next session before you leave, and holding to it, does more for your result than anything else on this list.
What to expect, session by session
A typical course
- After each sessionTreated hairs shed over the following one to three weeks. It can look like regrowth; it is not.
- Sessions 2 to 3Most people notice reduced density and longer gaps between shaves.
- Sessions 6 to 880 to 90 percent lasting reduction is typical on the FEMME 4D. What regrows tends to be finer and slower.
- AfterwardsThe destroyed follicles stay gone. An occasional top-up, often once or twice a year, deals with follicles that were dormant during the course.
How long those results hold, and why the honest word is reduction rather than removal, is covered in how long laser hair removal lasts.
Plan your course
Pick an area, a start date and a number of sessions to see roughly when each one would fall, when you would finish and what the course costs.
Your course, date by date
Dates use the middle of each area’s usual spacing. Your technician confirms the exact interval at each visit.
What a full course costs
Because nobody finishes in one visit, every area has a six-session package that costs no more than five single sessions: for example underarms are $250 for six, a Brazilian $400, full legs $475 and full body $1,495. The full list is on our pricing page, and how those prices compare with 80 other Canadian clinics is in our laser hair removal cost survey.
Questions we hear about sessions
How many laser hair removal sessions do I need?
Most people need six to eight sessions, spaced four to eight weeks apart, and some need up to ten. Coarse or dense hair, hormonally driven hair and deeper skin treated at conservative settings are the usual reasons for more. Most people notice a clear reduction after two or three sessions.
How far apart should laser hair removal sessions be?
Usually four to eight weeks. The face, underarms and bikini area are typically treated every four to six weeks, and the arms, legs, back and stomach every six to eight, because hair on those areas cycles more slowly. Your technician sets the exact interval at each visit.
Can I book sessions closer together to finish faster?
No. The laser only affects follicles in their growth phase, and the ones that were resting at your last visit need time to start growing. Booking early treats fewer follicles rather than finishing the course sooner.
When will I see results from laser hair removal?
Treated hairs shed over the one to three weeks after each session. Most people notice reduced density after two or three sessions, and 80 to 90 percent lasting reduction after a full course is typical on the FEMME 4D, though it is not a guarantee.
Will I need sessions after the course ends?
Often, yes, but far fewer. Many people come back for an occasional top-up, often once or twice a year. With PCOS or other hormonal hair growth, plan for a maintenance session every few months.
Can I shave between laser hair removal sessions?
Yes, and you should. Do not wax, pluck, thread or use an epilator between sessions, because they pull the hair out of the follicle, and the follicle with a hair in it is what the laser needs to find at your next session.
How much does a full course cost?
At Femme Laser Clinic, a six-session package costs no more than five single sessions: for example $250 for underarms, $400 for a Brazilian, $475 for full legs and $1,495 for full body. Prices are in Canadian dollars, plus 13% HST in Ontario or 5% GST at our Vancouver clinic.
Find out your own number. At a free consultation we look at your skin and hair, patch test, and tell you how many sessions you are likely to need, or tell you plainly if laser is not the right choice.
