Electrolysis vs Laser Hair Removal: Which One Do You Need?
These two get compared as if one is simply better. They are not competing versions of the same treatment — they work by completely different mechanisms, and the mechanism decides which one suits your hair.
The short version: laser needs pigment, electrolysis does not. Almost everything else follows from that one fact. And because Femme does not offer electrolysis, we have no reason to talk you out of it — for some people it is genuinely the better answer, and this article says so.
How each one actually works
Laser hair removal
A laser emits light at wavelengths that melanin absorbs. The pigment in your hair takes up that light, converts it to heat, and the heat travels down the shaft to the follicle. A follicle heated enough stops producing hair. The surrounding skin holds far less pigment than a dark hair, so it is largely unaffected — and on a cooled device it is actively chilled at the same moment.
Because the laser fires across an area rather than at individual hairs, it treats many follicles per pulse.
Electrolysis
A very fine probe is inserted into the follicle itself, alongside the hair. A small electrical current is delivered, which destroys the growth cells at the base. The hair is then lifted out with tweezers.
No pigment is involved at any point. The current does not care what colour the hair is, because it is not looking for it.
The catch is in the description: one follicle at a time.
The deciding factor is hair colour
If you take one thing from this article, take this.
Laser needs dark hair. The bigger the contrast between the pigment in the hair and the pigment in the skin, the better it works. Dark, coarse hair is close to ideal. Fine hair responds less well. And white, grey, blonde or true red hair holds little or no melanin, which means the laser has almost nothing to act on. This is a limitation of physics rather than of any particular machine, and no device gets around it. We cover the specifics in our article on laser hair removal and grey hair.
Electrolysis works on any colour. White, grey, blonde, red, fine, coarse — all the same to an electrical current. For anyone whose hair the laser cannot see, electrolysis is not the alternative option, it is the only option.
That single distinction resolves most of the choice before any other factor is considered.
Area size, and why it matters so much
The second consideration is simple arithmetic.
A laser handpiece with a 12 x 20 mm spot covers a large area quickly. Full legs take somewhere in the region of twenty-five minutes a session.
Electrolysis treats each follicle individually, and each one takes seconds. On a small area — an upper lip, a few stray chin hairs, eyebrows — that is entirely practical. On full legs it is not a realistic proposition for most people in either time or cost.
So the rough rule:
- Large areas — legs, back, full body, arms: laser, assuming your hair has enough pigment.
- Small, precise areas — a handful of hairs, eyebrow shaping, isolated white hairs: electrolysis.
“Permanent” means something different for each
This is the distinction most articles blur, and it is worth being exact about.
Electrolysis is the only method permitted to be described as permanent hair removal. Regulators in Canada and the United States allow that specific claim because the follicle is destroyed directly.
Laser produces permanent hair reduction. That is the accurate term, and it is why clinical literature often calls it laser hair reduction. After a full course most people keep eighty to ninety percent fewer hairs, with what regrows coming back finer and slower, and top up occasionally. Eighty to ninety percent reduction across your legs is, for most people, functionally the end of shaving. But it is not the same claim as permanent removal, and any clinic telling you otherwise is overselling.
Time commitment
Laser runs six to ten sessions for most people, spaced four to six weeks apart, because only follicles in their active growth phase respond to any given session. That is roughly six to twelve months from start to finish. Our guide to how many sessions you need explains the cycle.
Electrolysis also works with the growth cycle, and because it treats hairs individually it takes considerably longer overall. Even a small area is typically a course of regular appointments across a year or more. Practitioners will usually give you a realistic estimate at consultation, and you should ask for one.
Comfort
Both are described as uncomfortable rather than painful, and both are brief in any one spot.
Laser feels like a hot elastic band snapping against the skin, blunted considerably where the handpiece is cooled. It also gets easier as a course progresses, because each session leaves less pigment to absorb energy.
Electrolysis is usually described as a localised heat or stinging sensation at each follicle. Because it is hair by hair, the sensation is repeated rather than swept across an area — which some people find easier and others find harder. It does not get milder as the course goes on in the way laser does.
How the cost works
The pricing models are structured differently, which makes direct comparison misleading.
Laser is priced per area, with package pricing for a course, because a session treats a whole region regardless of how many hairs are in it. Our prices are published per area and per six-session package.
Electrolysis is usually priced by time — per fifteen minutes, half hour or hour — because the work scales with the number of follicles. Two people with the same area treated can pay very different amounts depending on density.
We are not going to quote electrolysis prices here, because they are not ours to quote and they vary widely by practitioner. Ask locally.
Using both
For a lot of people this is the right answer, and it is rarely suggested.
If you have a mix of dark and light hair in the same area — common on the face, and common as hair greys with age — the efficient sequence is laser first to clear the bulk of the pigmented hair quickly, then electrolysis afterwards for the white, grey or blonde hairs the laser could never have treated.
Doing it in that order matters. Clearing the dark hair first means the electrolysis practitioner is working through far fewer follicles, which makes that stage shorter and cheaper.
One practical note: do not have electrolysis in an area shortly before a laser session. Electrolysis removes the hair from the follicle, and the laser needs the hair present to conduct energy down to the root — the same reason we ask you not to wax or pluck.
So which one?
Three questions settle it:
- What colour is the hair? Light, white, grey or red: electrolysis. Dark: laser is likely faster and cheaper.
- How big is the area? Large: laser. A small patch or a handful of hairs: electrolysis.
- Do you need the word permanent? If total permanence on a specific patch matters to you, electrolysis is the only method that can claim it.

Which is better, electrolysis or laser hair removal?
Neither is better in general; they suit different hair. Laser targets pigment, so it works on dark hair and covers large areas quickly. Electrolysis destroys the follicle with an electrical current and works on any hair colour, including white and grey, but treats one follicle at a time.
Does laser hair removal work on grey or white hair?
Not well. The laser needs melanin in the hair to absorb its energy, and grey, white and most blonde or red hair has too little. This is a limit of the physics rather than of a particular device, and electrolysis is the appropriate method for those hairs.
