Acne scarring is not surface pigment. Boxcar, rolling and icepick scars sit in the dermis, where the original inflammation broke down collagen and left a depression behind. That is why surface creams and light exfoliation rarely change them.
Microneedling reaches that layer. For scar tissue our protocol sets a depth of 1.0 to 2.0 mm, deeper than a routine facial pass, and the practitioner works in vertical, horizontal and diagonal passes. The controlled micro-channels break up the fibrous tethering under a rolling scar and trigger fresh collagen and elastin to fill the gap.
Depth is never assumed. Every appointment starts with a skin assessment on the Fitzpatrick scale and a medical history review. Active breakouts are a contraindication, so we treat scarring once the skin has settled, and we tell you honestly if a course is likely to help before you book one.
In Scarborough, Zarana (Medical Esthetician) performs this treatment at our Markham Road clinic, which holds 4.9 out of 5 across 164 verified Fresha reviews. Scar work is planned as a course rather than a single visit, so the first appointment is an honest assessment of which scar types you actually have and what a course can realistically change.
Why Scarborough chooses Femme for acne scars
Depth set for scar tissue
Scars are treated at 1.0 to 2.0 mm, the range our protocol specifies for scarring, rather than a single default setting used on every client.
Multi-directional passes
Vertical, horizontal and diagonal passes work the fibrous bands that hold a rolling scar down, instead of a single sweep across the surface.
Assessed before treated
Fitzpatrick skin typing, medical history and contraindication screening happen before the needle depth is chosen.
Your acne scars protocol in Scarborough
Every acne scars appointment at our Scarborough clinic follows the same six-step protocol, worked at 1.0 to 2.0 mm, the depth range our protocol sets for this concern. Your technician talks you through each stage.
Skin analysis and scar mapping
We look at which scar types you actually have, since boxcar, rolling and icepick scars respond differently, and confirm there are no contraindications.
Cleanse and degrease
Makeup is removed and the skin is cleansed and degreased so the cartridge glides cleanly.
Medical-grade disinfection
The treatment area is disinfected with medical-grade antiseptic before anything touches the skin.
Topical numbing
Numbing cream is applied and given time to absorb, then removed completely. Scar depth work makes this step standard rather than optional.
Multi-pass needling
Sterile single-use cartridges at 1.0 to 2.0 mm, in vertical, horizontal and diagonal passes, adjusted to your skin thickness and comfort.
Serum and recovery
A professional serum such as hyaluronic acid, PDRN or exosomes may be applied where appropriate, followed by your aftercare plan.

Acne Scars microneedling questions in Scarborough
How many sessions do acne scars need in Scarborough?
Scarring is a course, not a single visit. Most clients are planned for a series spaced several weeks apart so collagen has time to rebuild between sessions. Your practitioner gives you a realistic number at consultation after seeing the scar types.
Does microneedling work on icepick scars?
Icepick scars are the narrowest and deepest, and they respond less predictably than rolling or boxcar scars. We will tell you at consultation if we expect a meaningful change, and if another approach would suit you better.
Can I be treated while I still have active acne?
No. Active breakouts are a contraindication in our protocol, because needling across active lesions risks spreading bacteria. We treat once the skin is clear.
What is the downtime?
Expect redness that settles within a day or two, then light flaking as the surface layer turns over. Scar-depth work sits at the stronger end of the range, so plan the appointment with that in mind.
Do I need to stop retinol first?
Yes. Retinol, retinoids, AHA and BHA exfoliants, glycolic and salicylic acid, chemical peels and waxing should stop 5 to 7 days before your appointment.
